since the conversation has reternud to gps clocks, i thought i might post this comment.suppose you have two clocks. you place them next to each other. a pulse from a satellite passing by at velocity v is used to synchronize them. an observer on the satellite and you will agree that the clocks are synchronized. the key is that the clocks are not separated by any distance.now the two clocks are moved so they are separated by a distance l on the ground. you could do a measurement on the ground from midway between them by flashing a light to synchronize the clocks again if you like. and suppose the orbit of the satellite passes directly over both clocks. to an observer on the satellite, even when the satellite is midway between the clocks, the two clocks will not appear to be synchronized. the difference will be vl/c^2. this comes directly from the sr lorentz transformation equations. and these equations have been tested extensively. (note, this is different from the time dilation effect on the the ticking rate of moving clocks which is much smaller.)now suppose you decide to use the pulse from the satellite to synchronize the clocks. for simplicity, you arrange to use a pulse when the satellite is the same distance from each clock. the clocks reset when the pulse arrives and now to an observer on the satellite they are synchronized.however, if you were to repeat the synchronization measurement on the ground, you would find the clocks are not synchronized. their synchronization would be out by vl/c^2. for opera the term would work out to 30 ns if the satellite orbit lines up with the detector and accelerator.so the question for opera is whether this needs to be taken into account, and if so, has it been? depending on the orientation of the satellites used, or the configuration terms in their gps disciplined atomic clocks, it may not matter at all. however, i did not notice an explicit mention of vl/^2 in the student's thesis on the opera timing, but a thesis is not a paper and the discussion was extremely technical. it seems very likely that within a collaboration of 100+ sharp people, that this well-known effect would have been addressed. still, it would be nice to hear confirmation from opera that this is in fact the case.
